We are committed to providing high quality maternity care for women during their pregnancy, labour and after the birth of their baby. We ensure that the birth of a child is a safe, life-enhancing experience for the mother, her husband and family. We encourage women and their families to be involved in making choices about their journey through pregnancy, birth and parenthood, by giving good and timely information. We respect their decisions and give dignity through kind and compassionate care. We promote normality in childbirth.

Through our commitment to individualized care, we provide the options to enable informed choice. These options involve clinical and cost effectiveness, public health initiatives, user evaluations and involvement. Professionally qualified midwives are an integral part of our service. Our philosophy focuses on a mother, husband and baby centred maternity service, designed to meet individual needs, and wishes throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the early days of parenthood. PRE-PREGNANCY CLINICS

Our team at Fernandez Hospital has been looking for after high-risk mothers from pre-pregnancy times to antenatal care, delivery, and follow-ups post-delivery.

Fernandez Hospital introduced the concept of a dedicated high-risk pregnancy unit and started Fernandez Hospital, Hyderguda, with a full-fledged labour ward and an obstetric ICU with a multidisciplinary team of obstetricians, in-house obstetric physicians, critical care team, anaesthetists, and neonatologists.

    HIGH RISK OP

Motherhood is special and for some it gets complicated when a risk factor develops. Risk assessment should include a comprehensive evaluation of all relevant medical and contextual factors that may impact a woman during pregnancy. Both the outcome and timing of previous pregnancies can increase a woman’s risk of maternal morbidity or mortality.

The increasing rate of caesarean delivery has contributed to the increasing prevalence of placenta accreta spectrum. Given the impact of placenta accreta spectrum on severe and often life-threatening maternal haemorrhage, this trend has implications for the rates of maternal morbidity and mortality.

Obesity is an example of a common chronic condition associated with an increased risk of maternal morbidity and mortality and the development of other chronic medical conditions. Hence, it is vital and logical that there has to be a specialised team dedicated only for this group of women.

Our team at Fernandez Hospital has been looking after high-risk mothers from pre-pregnancy times, to antenatal care, delivery and follows up post-delivery.

Fernandez Hospital introduced the concept of a dedicated high risk pregnancy unit and started Fernandez Hospital, Hyderguda, with a full-fledged Labour Ward and an obstetric ICU with a multidisciplinary team of obstetricians, in-house obstetric physicians, critical care team, anaesthetists, and neonatologists.

    OBSTETRIC MEDICINE

Medical disorders contribute significantly to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Women with chronic conditions, such as hypertension, pre-existing diabetes mellitus, cardiac and renal disease, represent an estimated 10% of delivery hospitalizations. The presence of such conditions increases the risk of both pregnancy complications and progression of underlying disease during pregnancy.

We started the department of Obstetric Medicine in the year 2003, and today we have 4 physicians, 6 obstetric consultants and 3 anaesthesia consultants and several specialty consultants like endocrinology, rheumatology, gastroenterology successfully running Fellowship programmes in obstetric medicine, maternal-foetal medicine, and obstetric anaesthesia, in their respective departments. At Fernandez Hospital – Hyderguda we are fully geared to take care of these women during this critical time. The obstetric, physician and anaesthesia teams work hand in hand to ensure well-being of the mother and her baby. This is also backed by the infrastructure facilities like Obstetric ICU and High Dependency Unit.

The journey of pregnancy and childbirth is special for women with medical disorders. We consider it our privilege in holding hands of these mothers when they go through this journey. We, at Fernandez Hospital, being the torchbearers of this branch of medicine in India, wish to have more such units in India, that can take care of women with medical disorders in pregnancy so that morbidity and mortality in India can match that of the western world.

    OBSTETRIC ICU

This high-risk pregnancy unit has four ICU beds to care for critically ill women, with two isolation rooms which can take mothers with severe infections like swine flu.

We have all facilities to monitor and support these mothers, except a dialysis unit. These women are under supervision of our critical care and anaesthesia team, with multidisciplinary team supporting them.

The hospital has a Level 3 NICU for extremely small, preterm births, or sick neonates requiring support and interventions. The neonatal team is experienced, qualified and recognized for its neonatal care, with the smallest baby with intact survival being a 600 gram baby.

At Fernandez Hospital doctors and staff from many disciplines combine their expertise to plan and provide the best care for the woman and her baby.

We have morning and evening clinics for the convenience of working women. A prior appointment is necessary. Covid pandemic lead to change in our practice, we started tele consultation to take care of pregnant mothers.

    The importance of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a natural, safe and healthy way to provide nutrition for your baby. The overall composition, temperature and cleanliness of breast milk makes it an ideal food source for a newborn. Breastfeeding is beneficial not only to the baby but to the mother as well. All healthy newborns should receive exclusive breastfeeds for the first six months and mothers should continue to breastfeed their infants for two years or beyond.

    The benefits of Breastfeeding

It strengthens the bond between the mother and the newborn.

It supplies the required nutrients for the appropriate growth of the baby and builds the baby’s immune system.

It protects the baby from diseases like obesity and cancer.

It keeps common allergies, infections and sickness at bay.

It is easily digested, avoiding constipation, diarrhea or an upset stomach.

The Labour and Delivery Suite is the heart of our hospital and has 6 delivery rooms all equipped with facilities to monitor mother and baby, continuously if needed.

The unit has the facility for electronic fetal heart rate monitoring, fetal scalp electrode and fetal lactate facility to identify fetal distress. Each labour suite is equipped with FM 30 model of Philips cardio tocography and  non invasive blood pressure monitor . We have emergency operation theatre next to labour ward to deal with all emergencies.

We have 24x7 cover by a consultant obstetrician, neonatologist and anaesthetist to deal with high-risk mothers.
