Academics at Fernandez
ACADEMICS
Fernandez Hospital established its Department of Academics in 2001 to keep abreast with advances in medical information and technology. In the process of developing into a Tertiary Care Referral Centre for Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology, Fernandez Hospital has also become a teaching hospital, attracting observers and interns from all over the country and abroad. As an established teaching institute, FH has given opportunity to several medical students from various countries visiting the Hospital to do their electives, and for a period of observerships.
The department coordinates the various academic activities of the DNB Training Programme and the Perinatal Education Programme, besides the specialized training programmes in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, High-Risk Pregnancy, Obstetric Anaesthesia and Neonatology.
The department also ensures that the curriculum set by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences is strictly adhered to by each department. The respective DNB Coordinators meet their DNB students every quarter to obtain adequate feedback. They are encouraged to come forward with their difficulties and problems and every attempt is made to solve these.
Various National and International faculties are invited for lectures. These guest lectures have tremendously helped both the resident staff and the faculty to update their knowledge and seek clarifications from their guests. This has also ensured that the hospital gets an exposure to doctors from different countries who visit India.
We encourage conducting and publishing original research studies and holding seminars, workshops, panel discussions and journal clubs.
Over the last few years, we have conducted regular seminars and workshops that adhered to the highest standards. All such activities are recognized by the Telangana Medical Council, and adds up to the attendees’ CME hours, which are necessary to continue MCI registration.
NEONATOLOGY
The Dept. Of Neonatology at Fernandez Hospital cares for neonates requiring intensive and special care. We include all members of the health care team and the family in discussions related to each baby’s diagnosis, treatment plan and progress. The team provides round-the-clock surveillance. It is fully equipped with incubators, high-end ventilators, iNo, invasive and non-invasive monitors, phototherapy units and laminar flow. In fact, because of the high-quality care offered to critical neonates, Fernandez Hospital receives many in-utero referrals from the twin cities, surrounding districts and neighbouring states. Our limits of viability have been lowering constantly, and right now, we can give quality care for babies of gestational age 26 weeks onwards and birth weight of 750 grams onwards.

School of Nursing
COURSES OFFERED
Post Basic Diploma in Nursing Practitioner in Midwifery
Midwifery, with its woman-centered focus and emphasis on respectful care, becomes an integral part of comprehensive quality maternity services. Studies (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2016) revealed that women who received midwifery care and support were less likely to experience interventions and more likely to be satisfied with their care. The Cochrane Review also showed significantly higher rates of spontaneous vaginal deliveries, lowered C-section rates and lowered risk for neonatal intensive care.
The need for professional midwives in maternity services is being recognized on a global level. India urgently needs professional midwives. With this background, the INC has introduced the Post Basic Diploma in Nurse Practitioner in Midwifery. The course is designed to prepare registered nurses GNM & B.Sc. (N) with specialized knowledge, skills and aptitude in providing advance quality care to mothers and neonates, their families and communities at all the levels of care.
Post Basic Diploma in Neonatal Nursing
Neonatal nurses are a specialty cadre having knowledge and expertise in the care of both healthy and sick newborns. Their training includes care of healthy newborns as well as care of premature and critically ill infants in Neonatal intensive care units. They would be competent to resuscitate babies at birth, have knowledge in breastfeeding practices, possess the ability to identify sick babies and do most Neonatal procedures. They sometimes serve as primary caregivers to premature or ill newborns.
Post Basic Diploma in Neonatal Nursing is designed to create a cadre of INC recognized specialty nurses to provide competent care to newborns at the institutional and community level. The course is designed to prepare registered nurses (GNM & B.Sc) with specialized knowledge, skills and aptitude in providing advance quality care to neonates, their families and communities at all the three levels of care.
